The Passive House is the world's leading standard in energy-efficient construction: The energy savings as compared to mandatory new building standards amounts to more than 80 per cent. Heating costs for a home are reduced to only ten to 25 Euros per month - high energy prices therefore hardly affect Passive House residents. The space heating demand in a Passive House is less than 15 kWh/(m²a) (with respect to the treated floor area).
The Passive House Institute (PHI) offers two certificates, which facilitate quality assurance of the design process:
All certificates offered by the PHI are based on published criteria and on characteristics and/or qualifications which can be verified objectively. The acquisition of a certificate from the PHI is voluntary and based on uniform contracts. The logos for the certificates are protected by trademark law.
Certified Passive House Designers have demonstrated sound fundamentals on Passive House Design. Since knowledge is always personal only individuals are certified. Every five years Designers must substantiate maintenance and further development of their knowledge.
Certified Passive House Designers must not be confused with accredited bodies for certification of buildings as "Quality approved Passive House".
